Could (present). Could have (past)

You use could in the present tense and use could have in the past tense.

· We are so bored, we could sleep all day. (present)

· We were that bored, we could have slept all day. (past)

English Grammar may use the words ‘could have’ when explaining something that, although possible, did not occur.

The rain was good, but it could have been better.
