Used to do and am used to doing. The meanings of the sentences differ.

Thank you for creating this site. I found your list of the meanings of 'get' helpful for my ESL students. I just wanted to comment in order to clarify this one a little further.
ReplyDeleteThe difference is not between "used to do" and "used to doing," but between "used to + BASE verb" and "be used to + gerund (-ing verb)".
"used to + BASE verb" = when you did something in the past as a habit or regular fact, but you no longer do, such as "I used to read more, but now I don't have time." Or I used to like Michael Jackson, but now I think he's weird."
"be used to + gerund" = something you are accustomed to. For example. "I'm used to doing karate every day because I've been doing it for 5 years." Actually, this is more often used with the pronoun 'it' replacing the gerund as in: I've been doing karate every day for 5 years so now I'm used to it.
Hope that helps!
